The Making Of Oculi Mundi
Launched in 2022, Oculi Mundi is the online home of The Sunderland Collection of maps and atlases - and soon to be the home of its sister collection, Ex Carta.
Meaning ‘the eyes of the world’ in Latin, Oculi Mundi is intended as a place where all feel welcome, and can explore and be inspired by beautiful early maps. You can read stories about objects in the collections, listen to our podcast, discover online exhibitions, and find references to guide your journey.
Oculi Mundi has been described by visitors as ‘beautiful’, ‘the most amazing website I have ever seen’, and just ‘so cool’! In beta form it won bronze at the European Design Awards; and it has since won the Gold Jury Award and Gold Popular Vote Prize in Arts and Culture at The Lovie Awards in 2024.
Join Helen Sunderland-Cohen, custodian of The Sunderland and founder of Oculi Mundi, as she provides a personal introduction to Oculi Mundi, tracing its evolution from a spark of an idea to the ground-breaking and award-winning digital cultural heritage experience that it is today!
Edited and produced by Eric de Broche des Combes, filmed by Haris Ahmed of Haych Digital.
