Mercator Projection

Back to people overview

Named for Gerard Mercator. A projection solving the ancient problem of how to map the spherical earth onto a flat sheet of paper. This projection treats the world as a cylinder, while preserving compass bearings as straight lines.

The earliest example of a true Mercator projection in a map, contained in the "Christian Knight Map". This is a black and white map engraved on copperplate. The map is very detailed and below it there is an illustration of an unidentified Christian Knight fighting sin, the devil, carnal desire.
