Hans Holbein, the younger
Back to people overviewHans Holbein the Younger was a German painter and designer. He was one of the most celebrated portrait artists of his generation.
He spent much of his career in Basel, with stints in Lucerne and London. Holbein was born into a period of religious turbulence, during the Reformation. He came from a family of artists and his early years were spent assisting his father with commissions and honing his craft.
In 1515, Holbein was working as a print designer in Basel, this is probably when he designed the borders of Sebastian Münster’s world map (1532). Holbein then began a lucrative career as a portrait artist. By 1532 he had gained the patronage of Anne Boleyn and Thomas Cromwell and by 1535, he had become the painter of King Henry VIII.
