A Digital Heritage Destination
A destination for exploration, discovery and sheer joy, Oculi Mundi - the Eyes of the World - is a pioneering digital cultural heritage experience and the online home of The Sunderland Collection.
Launched in 2022, Oculi Mundi adopts a unique approach to the display of antique objects in digital space. Its user interface enables curious minds to immerse themselves into the world of early cartography, whilst remaining mindful of research needs and physical accessibility.
Oculi Mundi takes a fresh, innovative approach to presenting antique material online. We have tried to exploit the full potential of the digital environment and the best of current technology. As technology evolves, so will we!

The Eyes of the World
Oculi Mundi means 'the Eyes of the World'. We welcome fellow travellers and curious minds, exploring how different views of the world were made, and why; learning about the people behind the maps, and how they remain relevant today; and digging into the techniques that were used to create these wonderful objects.
It is a platform to explore high-resolution images of these beautiful objects, to peek inside the books, and to discover information and stories.
Oculi Mundi presents The Sunderland Collection itself, rich webpages about specific maps and topics, reference materials such as a timeline and glossary, innovative online exhibitions, videos of our events, supplementary material for our podcast, and more… so feel free to visit often, and to send us your suggestions.
