The title page bears the date 1675 and the imprint of Pieter Goos’ widow, who would run the business following her husband’s death in 1675. Although she would eventually add three new charts to the atlas, bringing the total to forty-four, the present example has the traditional forty-one plus the two supplemental charts.

The present example contains forty-two charts, the two extra charts being: a chart of the Straits of Dover (no. 12); and the ‘Paskaerte van de Zuydten Noordt Revier in Nieu Nederlant’ (no. 34). The chart of New York and New Jersey is considerably larger than the other charts in the atlases as it was probably published separately and included as a supplement upon request. The finely engraved chart details the East Coast of America from New Amsterdam (New York) to the Delaware River.

Pieter Goos (1616–1675) was an engraver, bookseller, and publisher who produced a number of highly influential maritime atlases. In 1666, Goos published his most famous work, the ‘Zee-

’). Although Goos was one of the best-known maritime booksellers of Amsterdam, much of his work was derivative. In the case of the ‘Zee- 

’, Goos copied nearly all the charts from Hendrick Doncker’s atlas of 1659.

Goos’ background was more as an engraver (following on from his father Abraham) and bookseller, rather than chartmaker. As a bookseller Pieter Goos wished to appeal as much to the library as to the galley, as can be seen by his explicit statement on the title page: that the work will be as beneficial to ‘Heerenen Kooplieden’ (gentlemen and merchants) as to ‘Schippers en Stuurllieden’ (pilots and seamen).
