The title page is printed in red, which indicates that the copy is a third issue (like most surviving copies of this work). The work’s patron, Federico Montefeltro, died on 10 November 1482, and the printing must therefore have been finished before that date. The identity of the engraver of the maps remains uncertain but it is believed by some to be Francesco Rosselli, who was one of the earliest known map sellers and was active in Florence until his death in 1513. These maps were sometimes sold separately or in sets without text. 

This map represents the known world at the time of Ptolemy: the Roman Empire, centred on the Mediterranean Sea, Europe, North Africa, and Western Asia. The use of a cone-shaped projection admits to an understanding of a wider world, which is spherical and unrecorded. It is first the printed map based Ptolemy's second projection, in which both parallels and meridians are shown curved to convey the spherical nature of the Earth.

Folio. 123 leaves, double and triple column, fifty-one lines and headline, roman letter, initial-spaces, most with printed guides; twenty-nine double-page and two single-page engraved maps (thirty-one total maps); text leaves watermarked with cardinal's hat (large and small); maps variously watermarked with crossed arrows, anchor in a circle, star in a circle, crossbow in a circle and Turk’s hat in a circle. Includes the sixteenth-century title page (folio 1r) with a colophon and register added (folio 10r).

’s Italian version (produced in rhyme, called 'terza rima' or verse) of Claudius Ptolemy’s '

' is one of the earliest atlases produced in a vernacular language. The maps within were created with considerable skill by a master engraver thought to be Francesco Rosselli (1448–c.1513) and includes contemporary maps of Spain, France, Italy, and Palestine. Smudges, excess ink, and even the printer’s thumbprints appear as fifteenth century 'makers marks' that point to the fact that copperplate printing was still a new technology. The atlas contains the only examples of Ptolemy’s maps printed in his original projection, which consists of equidistant parallels and meridians. Berlinghieri’s edition is also the first to provide gazetteers for each individual map.

This map appeared in Berlinghieri’s edition of Ptolemy’s '

', published in Florence in 1482, which was the third printed atlas, and the first in Italian with a commentary composed in verse.

The map was likely engraved by Francesco Rosselli, one of the leading engravers, painters and map sellers of his day and influenced by the great Renaissance artist Sandro Botticelli. The wind heads are redolent of the Zephyr depicted in Botticelli’s 'The Birth of Venus'.

Berlinghieri’s atlas was the first to present Ptolemy’s '

' in Italian as well as in any vernacular language. The atlas features thirty-one print maps that are among the first examples of maps made using new copperplate printing technologies. The provenance this example also has a rich history that begins in the sixteenth century with the wealthy Amadi family who were silk merchants in Venice. This particular copy was also once within the world-renowned collection of Otto Schäfer (1912–2000).
