Name: Complete First Edition Set of Winnie The Pooh
Author: Alan Alexander Milne

The front board papers present Shepard’s map of the Hundred Acre Wood, credited to ‘Me and Mr. Shepard Helpd’ by Christopher Robin, making the map part of the imaginary childhood world itself. In a naïve, sketched-out style, it establishes the imaginative geography of Pooh’s world, depicting the homes of its inhabitants and the sites of their adventures: ‘Pooh Bear’s House,’ ‘Piglet’s House,’ ‘Eeyore’s Gloomy Place,’ ‘Kanga’s House,’ and ‘Where the Woozle Wasn’t,’ complete with a ring of footprints in the snow.

Playfully subverting cartographic convention, the compass rose spells out ‘P-O-O-H’, scale is ignored, and figures tower over their dwellings. Yet the map’s whimsy does not undermine its function: it situates the narratives in a coherent, shared landscape that readers could revisit across successive books. Based loosely on Ashdown Forest in East Sussex, the Hundred Acre Wood exemplifies the overlap of real and imagined geographies, and has since become an archetype of the pictorial storybook map.

This complete set of first editions of A. A. Milne’s Pooh books –

 – includes E. H. Shepard’s celebrated map of the Hundred Acre Wood, providing young readers with a gentle and inviting cartography of woods, paths, clearings, and the homes of its inhabitants.

Credited to ‘Me and Mr. Shepard Helpd’ by Christopher Robin, the map is presented as an in-story artefact, part of the imaginary childhood world itself. Its naïve, sketched-out style playfully subverts cartographic convention – scale is ignored and the compass rose spells out ‘P-O-O-H’ – while still giving Pooh’s adventures a coherent shared geography that readers could revisit across successive books. Based loosely on Ashdown Forest in East Sussex, the Hundred Acre Wood has since become an archetype of the pictorial storybook map.

The first of A. A. Milne’s (1882–1956) classic Pooh books,

(1926), introduced its readers to the Hundred Acre Wood – a setting that helped define those of much subsequent children’s literature: pastoral, unspoiled by modernity, and evoking a sense of both nostalgia and belonging.

Inspired by his son Christopher Robin Milne and his nursery toys, Milne created stories of a bear named Winnie-the-Pooh, joined by companions Piglet, Eeyore, Kanga, Roo, Owl, Rabbit, and later Tigger. The name ‘Winnie’ derived from a Canadian black bear housed at London Zoo, while ‘Pooh’ came from a family swan. First appearing in verse in

, the character was fully realised in this collection of tales.

Shepard’s illustrations, based in part on his son’s teddy ‘Growler’, still define the books and Milne’s world, giving such eidetic shape to the characters that it is difficult to imagine any alternative versions. The stories were an instant success, spawning

(1928) and cementing Pooh’s status as ‘the most famous bear in English literature.’
